1-й ведущий: Dear boys
and girls! Dear guests! We are here to celebrate a wonderful spring holiday -
easter. Happy Easter to you! But at first we are going to tell you about the
origin of this holiday, its traditions and symbols.
2-й ведущий: Easter is a
movable feast; that is, it is not always held on the same date. Easter is the
first Sunday after the full moon after the moon's Spring Equinox.
The English name "Easter" is rather new. When the early English
Christians wanted others to accept Christianity, they decided to use the name
Easter for this holiday so that it would match the name of the old spring
celebration.

Tuesday, the day before Lent begins, is celebrated in many countries with
carnivals. Lent lasts for 40 days and 40 nights as a reminder of Christ’s
fasting in the wilderness. During Lent Christians give up something they like
to remind them not to be selfish, and perhaps to give the money which has been
saved to give others.
2-й ведущий: Palm Sunday
is so-called because Jesus is said to have ridden into Jerusalem on a donkey
just before His death, welcomed by the people waving palm branches. Churches
are decorated with palm branches on this day; in Britain people used to go (a)
palming two or three days before Palm Sunday, to collect yew, hazel or willow
branches, since palm trees do not grow in northern countries.
1-й ведущий: And now we
are going to tell you about Easter traditions and symbols. Easter symbols
Eggs symbolize new life. Eggs are usually brightly painted to reflect the
sunlight in spring.
The chick, hatching out of the egg, symbolizes new life and rebirth.
The rabbit or Easter Bunny as it is known in America was a
symbol of abundant life in ancient times, and reminds us of spring and
new life.
The white lilies symbolize the purity of Jesus.
The cross symbolizes Jesus’ victory over death.
Easter candles symbolize Jesus, "the light of the world”.
Palm branches represent when Jesus arrived in Jerusalem on the
first Palm Sunday and people waved palm branches, welcoming him.
Easter customs
Easter Sunrise is celebrated because Mary Magdalene entered the
garden and met Christ "at the rising of the sun”. People gather to pray when
the sun appears and then in procession go to the church.
One of the Easter traditions is eating Hot Cross Buns. These buns
have a cross of icing on the top to remind people of Christ.
